What does my art represent?
Hello! My name is Caitlyn Liu and my art is a culmination of storytelling, personal reflection, and a continuous search for joy in the mundane. My preferred mediums are acrylic paint, ceramics and digital art.
Currently, I reside in San Francisco, California with my husband and my two adorable munchkin cats. Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, I've created art for as long as I can remember. In my childhood to cope with adversity, I taught myself drawing, painting, sewing, and animation. These skills served as tools to process my grief, struggles, and confusion towards experiencing poverty, familial mental illness, and otherness in a non-asian community. As I fought to change my circumstances, I continued to utilize art to express and confront the range of emotions life can bring.
In 2022, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan’s Taubman College. My time at Taubman furthered my understanding of form and storytelling through static images. Following an architecture degree, I worked for a firm on major league sports facilities and commercial spaces. However, after looking for meaning in my work, I realized I hungered to go back to my roots: to create art for the individual. I am inspired by others' experiences, perseverance, and joys, so I strive to capture its singularity.
